"By now they're probably arguing about who picked this busy location," the principal laughed. "If their marriage survives this, I'm sure they'll be looking for another spot next year.".

Rick Kaufmann, an art teacher, said the gander charged at him when he parked in the lot the first day back from break.

Actually, it's not the Canada goose nesting on top of a White Plains High School storage garage that's causing all the trouble, but oh, that gander.

Asked if she's worried the birds might return during next year's mating season, Doherty was cautiously optimistic.

"I though he was hungry or something," he said. "The next day, he swooped down on me from the sky. I ran inside and spent most of the day laughing hysterically about it."

Siwek managed to back away and walk around the gander, but said his friends teased him the whole day.

"I was walking from the parking lot and I heard this loud honking behind me," said Josh Siwek, a senior who was attacked last week. "I turned around, and it was right behind me, flying toward my shoulder. My heart started pounding and I ducked. You don't realize how big they are when they're wings are spread. It was definitely scary."

Goose eggs take 28 to 30 days to hatch.

Journalism teacher Jessica Rappaport said groups of students were assigned to report on the birds and write stories. The best effort will be published in the next edition of "The Orange," the student newspaper.

No injuries, to man or beast, have been reported.

"This is Tiger Nation," Doherty said, a reference to the school's mascot. "Apparently, the geese didn't get the word. Since they nested during the break, they probably figured this would be a nice, quiet neighborhood."

Students and faculty members who parked in the lot by the school auditorium after the break were greeted by an aggressive, swooping, charging, flapping, honking, hissing bird that made sure they kept their distance from his expectant spouse. The gander has apparently established a no fly zone in the area too, chasing away any other geese that happen by.

"I know the journalism class has written about it, and I'm sure its been discussed in science classes," Doherty said.

Naturally, she said, students are having fun with the invasion, which has become something of a teaching moment. The kids have suggested holding a naming contest and installing a "goose cam." Someone tied "Angry Birds" balloons to a fire hydrant near the garage. Teachers are talking about the visitors in class.

"Everyone was talking about the geese, so it made sense to do a story," she said. "It's the best work they've done in class this year."

"We probably had a dozen or more attacks the first few days, although it's not as bad now," high school Principal Ellen Doherty said of the fowl couple that established squatter's rights on the garage during spring vacation. "I think he's figuring out that we're not going to bother them."

After consulting with wildlife experts who said goose, gander and goslings can be safely relocated once the eggs have hatched, school officials cordoned off the area with yellow caution tape. Students are reminded not to bother the birds during morning announcements.

"I was kind of the joke of the school until other people started getting attacked too," he said.
